Referral to review – what is the process?

Periodontics is the specialist branch of dentistry that deals with gums and the surrounding supporting structures of teeth and implants, including bone.

A Periodontist is a dentist with specialised training in caring for gums and supporting structures.

When a patient is referred to me, an assessment of the stage of disease is conducted and then the type and cost of treatment is determined according to each patient’s individual requirements. All patients will receive a detailed treatment plan and an estimate of fees prior to any treatment commencing.

Oral hygiene education is a focus in the early stages of working with a patient. Further management is then determined by the stage of the disease, but generally involves cleaning and disinfection of the soft tissues surrounding the teeth.

In advanced stages, I may perform surgical procedures to maximise positive outcomes. Periodontal procedures may include scaling and careful root cleaning, periodontal surgery, the placement of dental implants, bone and gum grafting, crown lengthening, gum lifts and other cosmetic gum surgery.

Ethics are very important to me, and ALL patients will be sent back to the referring dentist for review and continuing treatment. In the case of implants, all patients will return to their dentist for the creation and fitting of the crown. I believe in regular communication with the patient’s dentist and work collaboratively with the dental team.
